Today an artist friend stopped by in hopes of brightening her mood. Although the weather is gorgeous, and things are relatively okay, things just seemed a little overwhelming and out of nowhere the dread crept in. I’m happy we were here for her to lose herself in. I have those days. When nothing feels “right” and I start to despair, I try to surround myself with people and things that I know make me feel safe, warm, and in a beautiful place – emotionally and physically.
This time of year, when the evenings are still warm and the sun doesn’t set right away, I like to sit in the garden and observe the life outside. It’s tiny joys like this that can lift my spirits, put things back in perspective, and give me the energy to try again tomorrow.
Creating sacred space for yourself, whether it’s a corner of a room or a cleared out patch of garden, is essential to your well-being. People often underestimate the intense power of visual beauty and physical comfort. Living a life in which things are merely “functional” or they “just work”, is a drain on your creativity, warmth, spirit and yes, joy. For some people, that lovely place is their unmade bed. The thought of the soft covers and promise of sleep is like a balm to them. For me it’s a specific corner of my couch, wrapped up in my heavy blanket with my wine/water/whatever close by. I might light the candles, or I might just turn on ambient lighting. For me, the power of visual joy is undeniable. I can get by a whole day on having seen a gorgeous vignette.
Things are just “things” that’s true, but some things are special, and when grouped together in a certain way, they evoke a melancholy feeling, or inspire a thought or even invite you to stop and relax a while. That is truly the core of what Apartment 46 is about – inviting you in to stop and relax. Everything we’ve chosen we have chosen with love and curated intentionally. Everything you take from here we hope will enrich your space and add to your day to day.
Having a store, for my daughter and I, is about creating that curious little world in which you can get away for a minute. It’s the intangible benefit of surrounding yourself with beautiful things leaves a tangible impression.
We hope to continue to share our tiny joys with you and leave you that much more inspired.
Warmly,
Melisa and Miranda
