Autumn has become my most favorite time of year. The weather isn’t yet unbearably cold, Halloween is on its way, evening hot cocoa outside seems right, and the Flower Mart is brimming with amazing gourds, branches, and gorgeous Fall blooms. When it comes to flower selection, it doesn’t get any better in my opinion. Brides who choose Fall for their wedding have so many magical options. To me, decorating for Fall is more about color and texture than imagery. Think browns, yellows, and greens mixed with velvets and chenille. Massing candles on oversize holders creates instant warmth, while collecting branches and berries in earthen-ware containers creates an inviting arrangement. I like to take fallen leaves and heap them on my mantel, or when entertaining, put them all over the table. There is something fun and almost naughty about pushing piles of leaves about!
For me, fall decorating doesn’t need to be in-your-face “Halloween is coming!” I like the abstract aspect of “spooky”, such as the antique chest and the woven crow table-topper draped over the vintage wooden Italian wardrobe.
Don’t get me wrong, I love black, and have filled our shop windows with all things I consider a bit creepy, like antique black and white photos, candelabras and black chairs. However, I find skulls and skeletons curious and funny rather than scary.
To me, a black glitter skull on a plate creates a whimsical vignette. I’ve never been the kind of person that likes disembodied zombies, tombstones, blood, spider webs or fake spiders for that matter. It’s just kind of morbidly unsexy to me.
I highly recommend taking a look at the spaces you spend the most time in, whether it’s your living room, dining area or bedroom, and finding ways to bring hints of the season indoors. For a living room I would add a few of the sumptuous heavy cable-knit throws found in most stores these days. Adding textured throw pillows like a woven hemp or a warm-colored silk will give your seating areas a bit of elegance, while adding accessories in wood, distressed metals and even ceramics adds a feeling of coziness. You can never go wrong with candles, as long as you mass them and light them! I see so many unused candles in homes when it’s an easy, everyday luxury right there for the taking.
